Who we are

The Cambridge University Society of Women (CUSW) is a non-partisan organisation dedicated to providing a space for free speech, discussion and association between women. CUSW is proudly a single-sex, women-only environment with a membership open to any woman with a commitment to women’s sex-based rights and concerns.

Women can and should utilise their right to single-sex spaces for the purposes of safety, dignity and fairness. Maintaining an all-female environment for its own sake, however, is reasonable and justified. Women often self-censor in the presence of men and, increasingly, self-exclude from spaces that only purport to be ‘single-sex’.

We accept membership applications from any woman currently enrolled as a student at the University of Cambridge. We also have affiliated groups for Cambridge alumnae and academics and staff at the University.

Constitution

The Society’s constitution sets out the purpose, values, and governance of the Cambridge University Society of Women. It provides transparency and accountability, and ensures the Society operates in line with its founding aims.

The constitution defines who the Society is for, what it seeks to achieve, and how decisions are made. It outlines our commitment to advocating for women’s sex-based rights, fostering open and respectful discussion, and maintaining a single-sex environment in which women at the University of Cambridge can organise, learn, and speak freely, in line with the Equality Act 2010.

It also explains how membership operates, the structure and responsibilities of the Executive Committee, and the procedures governing elections, meetings, and finances. These provisions ensure fair representation, democratic oversight, and continuity within the Society.

The constitution is published in full to give members and the wider university community a clear understanding of the Society’s principles and how it is run.
